Ana – Kadena High School Class of ‘10

Ana contacted me before I left for my trip to the states/Italy (I know, no Italy photos yet – but you ALL know work comes first! I’ll get there, I PROMISE). I was booked. Even MORE booked because March was so rainy and I had to reschedule those people for May because I was going to be off island in April. I’ve been saying no to people a lot more than I’d like to, but in her email was something that made me stop from sending the negative reply.

“I was interested on doing my senior pictures, at the horse barn I work at. I really want some great pictures with my favorite things horses.”

Those of you who know me and what I love to shoot – you know I started to twitch and grin when I saw this one. SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT! And oh boy was it. Thankfully she was able to meet on a weekday, and I drove out to Mihara Horse Club toward sunset. It was a gorgeous night – before the rain came. And Ana – well…as you saw in the sneak peek on the last post, she’s just beautiful.

Beautiful

So we (Ana’s boyfriend and I) followed her as she rode Big up a grassy hill (have I mentioned how much I LOVE tall, uncut grass for photos?) to the top.

uphill

Can’t you just see Big’s tail flicking? LOVE THIS.

lookingback

And from the top of that hill, there was quite a view!

beautifulview

Ana’s leaving this summer, and will be attending Lake Erie College in Ohio for equestrian studies. She’s pretty serious about this! It’s easy to see her love for the animals, and their love for her.

AnaAndBigsFace

A collage of Ana & Big with their hilltop view. (MAN was the light gorgeous that day, wasn’t it?)

AnaAndBig

Congratulations, almost Graduate! I’m quite sure there are some proud people in your life…who might just tear up at the sight of THIS.

CapAndGown

We headed back down the hill and I did snap a couple of Ana with her boyfriend…not an easy smiler, but a little tickling helped.

cutecouple

Just before we lost our light, we headed to the beach. Thanks for braving the sand, Ana…I hope this made it worth it!

WalkInWater

The sun finally showed back up here in Okinawa…I have lots more to share with you soon. Back to work here so that I can finish up for the summer. I will not be taking any clients until September due to the insane tropical heat, my daughter being out of school, and my potential travel plans. I WILL, however, be offering camera classes (GAMU IS BACK!) so stay tuned for dates!

Thanks for visiting and all the amazing comments. I’m so lucky to do what I LOVE!

Work Email is DOWN

*** Update – I’m back! Full post later today I hope!***

I’m working on it – hopefully have it back up in an hour or two…thanks for your patience!
A peek at what’s to come when I’m not stressing about THAT situation…

Aubree, Class of 2010, Kadena High School

Aubree used to live in my building! Well…before I lived here. So I met Aubree and her sweet mom, Kim, at Maggie & Chuck’s going away party. Funny how you hand out that card, and talk about the future, and then POW. Here it is! Well Aubree is a senior this year, and in the chilly cloudy weather we had, she was a total ROCK STAR! (A stunning one, at that.)

AubreeInRed

(Can you say INSANELY photogenic? I love my job. Seriously.)

Aubree’s nicknames: Bree, Aubreezy, Panda, Yuriko
Aubree’s favorite class(es): AP Lit, Human Anatomy, Culinary II, Drawing (yeah, neurosurgeon/chef on the way!) ;)

flowery

Best thing about Aubree’s senior year: “I feel like I’m learning SO much more than any other year.”
What keeps Aubree busy after school: NHS, FBLA, Chinese Club, hanging out with friends, homework!

I have too many favorites to even BLOG from this session – but this is definitely a top 5. Ok, maybe 10…ACK!

wow

What Aubree is looking forward to most after graduation: The chance to learn more about the world, new experiences, and more independence.
Written on Aubree’s favorite t-shirt: Any t-shirt from davidandgoliathtees.com! Especially their sushi collection! So CUTE! (Oooh…off to check THAT out right now….)

blackflowerdress

Who does Aubrey admire most?: “My parents who are my biggest supporters and raised me to be strong, independent, moral and humble. They are what every parent should be. Also, Ghandi and Audrey Hepburn for being incredibly influential and inspiring people and humanitarians.” (SO well put, Aubree.)

At some point during the shoot Kim (who sort of took off to read her book instead of joining us…) said, “You girls just sound like you’re having so much FUN out there!” We totally WERE. Aubree is all about a cold climate place and didn’t even flinch to put on these sleeveless dresses in the chilly weather. Ya know how I love it when people suffer for my art! :D

Definitely my favorite from the session. FANTASTIC hair!

hair

Aubree brought the cutest clothes and …SHOES!!

onboat

What does Aubree want to be when she grows up?: “A surgeon! And a humanitarian…but I need money for that first. Haha!” With the right intentions, the money will come.

ingrass

What Aubree will remember most about her photo shoot: “I will remember your bubbly sunshine-like attitude! It made me feel completely comfortable in front of the camera as I talked to you. You made waking up at 5:30am SO worth it! Thanks, Aviva! You’re amazing!” Oh you are SO welcome and I’m thrilled to hear that. Waking up early should be for a great reason like senior photos, right? :)

blackandwhite

I could post all day – but I must keep editing. Thank YOU both, Aubree & Kim, for a ridiculously fun day – and for my Hawaiian TREATS you were so sweet to bring me! I have the best job AND the best clients.

ETA: Thanks to Bambi, Alexis, Anna, Hillary, Melissa, and Rebecca for FILLING Saturday’s shoot benefiting Thirst Relief International’s Haiti Water Project! I can’t wait to post a total. Yay!

Shaunna ~ Class of 2010! (AND My 150th Post!)

Crazy! Post #150….wow. In 20 months. 7.5 posts per month. I can do better. I don’t blog enough. And I really do enjoy it. Time just zooms by so fast I lose track – but I LOVE sharing with you!

Ok – on to today’s post – Shaunna! We met this past Saturday and walked around the sea wall area for her senior photo shoot. You know, it’s funny. I’ve definitely done a few shoots at the sea wall (and out in town in general)…and every time there are certain spots that are classics and that I really need to do. Not that they aren’t different depending on the subjects or the weather, but you know what I mean. But there are also new discoveries. On EVERY urban shoot. Each client has a unique spot or type of photo in their gallery because we’re covering these places out in town. On foot. For example…

graffitiwall

I do live in this neighborhood…and I’ve been dying to take a portrait at this wall. Shaunna’s choice of yellow bag and turquoise scarf didn’t hurt in making this a prime location! Or her matching blue eyes…WOW.

blueyellowwall

Shaunna’s considering going to college in places like Alaska and Montana. She loves the winter. (Not so much of that in Okinawa!) In the early morning when we started, it was such a gorgeous day – but a bit chilly. She was so happy in a t-shirt with wind-kissed cheeks!

SeaWall

Shaunna is the youngest of three, and she brought her mom with her for the shoot. (Sigh – SO sweet.) Well Mom got extra points for coming back down from Okuma before dawn that morning to be here in time for the shoot! (Annette, you’re fantastic! Thank you for coming along.) Down the road was a bright yellow wall – and you know, one of her favorite colors (NOT just because she goes to Kadena High) is YELLOW.

This series makes me giggle and cry all at the same time.I know how you feel, Annette.

MomAndDaughter

This black sweater sure did make her eyes pop. And around every bend there was GLOOORIOUS light! (Come on, fellow photogs, you understand. That light that you wish would stay all day long.) Oh my goodness…

woodlattice

KAPOW – my favorite. For now. Ask me later, I might have a different one. Mom, you were so right. Classic beauty.

stairs

OOH, there! Another yellow wall! CAP AND GOWN TIME!

capandgown

I could’ve stayed out all day with this one. Can you blame me?

bygate

In her first email to me, she said she wanted some photos at Family Mart. I get it – and I LOVE it. It’s like the mall was for me as a Jersey Girl teen. But with peach water and onigiri.

FM

Now how many seniors have THAT in their photos?

Well, I could post these all day, but must get back to editing the rest. THANK you so much, Shaunna & Annette! I had a blast with you (if you couldn’t tell) and will be done soon!

Perhaps another before & after post soon – what do YOU want to see?? Comment and let me know!

Zion Seniors

Hi! I’m NOT dead. Not even sick. Just realizing that as the holidays came and went, I worked a lot but also took some much-needed time with my family. THANK you to my clients – who I know understand this and have been very patient. I’m not ignoring you, nor have I forgotten you – it’s just taking me a bit longer than usual to catch up; but I’ll get there. I promise.

These three young people (who I photographed so long ago it was still pretty warm outside) attend Zion Christian Academy. My daughter’s piano teacher, Mimi, has a son in the graduating class. Well why wouldn’t they want some senior photos? I’m in! So ladies first!

Sarah is the lady of the group – she’s beautiful, she’s sweet, and she’s athletic. She’s also wonderfully sentimental and loves her family, and she brought her grandfather’s hat to wear for a few photos.

withthehat

Can you still see? Her smile is pretty dazzling. And she brought along some killer outfits – and SHOES.

sitting

Oh Sarah – you’re just a knockout.

onsteps

Next (I’ll just go alphabetically, it’s easier): Kaiga. I’m not sure he knew what we’d be doing that morning, but thankfully he put up with my silliness. Sit on the ground? Really? Yes. Really. There? Yep. Don’t sit in the puddle…but yes, there. Oh. Ok. BAM! Love this.

againstwallK

I loved editing these photos – all three kids are so different, and I think Kaiga has a really intriguing face.

onstairsK

He’s got this warm smile…he’s got a goofy side, I just know it.

okialldayK

And then there’s the class clown…I mean, Nico! He’s experienced an Aviva shoot once before, and he definitely brought the FUN. Oh Nico – this is SO you!

onjacks

Nico’s family is very proud of their Filipino heritage. I love this natural smile! A definite favorite.

stairsN

By the end of the day it was quite warm, and we were all hungry. I think the only way I got these last few smiles was by saying, “One more and we’re DONE!” (well, that and the fact that they got to miss some class time to come out and play with me)

byocean

Ok – last but not least, a few of the whole crew. They were great individually, but I think you’ll see that they lit up when they were together. (I know my fabulous assistant Annya agreed!)

Awesome sky…

onwall

These three were naturals! Are you kidding me?

onbench

Sarah & Kaiga brought along their basketball jerseys for a shot. (And I must have made some extremely funny crack here because I LOVE their smiles!)

basketball

But of the group shots this is probably my favorite. We’ll see. But it’s just – cool! And what kid isn’t wearing an OKI ALL DAY shirt these days? Love it!

arminarm

HUGE thank yous to Annya (for helping me with the formal portraits and the casual shots), Mimi for setting this up, joining us on shoot day and getting McDonald’s for Annya & me after the shoot, Mrs. Wilson for allowing the kids to spend some time with me on a school day, and Coco for coming along and being one HECK of a kick-booty stylist! I’m tellin’ ya – I might hire you to join me for shoots in the future. Thank you! Be patient – I have a lot to do on this one – I promise it’ll be worth the wait! More soon – THREE more shoots in the hopper that I’m editing right now….back to it!

Lia – Class of ‘10

Lovely Lia (and her amazing head of curly hair that you know I immediately fell in love with) attends Kubasaki High School. We initially had plans for her shoot in October when she realized that WHOOPS it was Homecoming day! So finally after a month of waiting – her shoot day came. And what a BEEEAUUUUUUTIFUL day it was. Look at this yummy light!

beach

Lia’s favorite class is Journalism, and she’s really enjoying her MCCS Marketing internship too. (Lia and I – we share some common interests. I have a former life in marketing myself….)

The best thing about senior year: “All the freedom which you seem to acquire as a senior (although it does come with an equal amount of responsibility) & recently attending the Far East Journalism/Yearbook conference in Tokyo.” This girl has her head on straight!

fisheyebeach

What keeps Lia busy after school? Lifeguarding, loads of homework (I’m sure!), and being the journalism &  yearbook editor.

Most listened to song on the iPod right now? There are a ton, but she picked “Tim McGraw” by Taylor Swift. LOVE IT!

Yes, Lia – you are GORGEOUS, sweet, and smart. And kinda have a Mariah Carey thing going on….BEAUTIFUL!!!!

gorgeous

Lia’s favorite t-shirt is her OKI ALL DAY shirt! (total Okinawa fad – my kid has one too)

Who does she admire most? “Those with enthusiasm, passion, zest, creativity, motivation, integrity, confidence, and respect for life and others.”

Well said, Lia – you exhibit those qualities and more! (She totally spotted these tiles and REQUESTED to lie down on them. SIGH – I love you, Lia!)

cooltile

Don’t you love how walking around in the city can still offer a grassy field? This one is a fave!

ingrass

Oh – did I mention? She also requested to bring her new camera and have it in her photos because she’s totally getting into photography! Before you leave you’re SO taking a photo like this of me, girlfriend. (And know that I wish I’d look like that in the adorable little white dress. I totally dress that way and pose like that when I’m shooting…right? Totally.)

withcamera

What do you want to be when you grow up, Lia? “I’m split between becoming a pediatrician and becoming a journalist. (My dream is to be the editor-in-chief of Glamour magazine.) We’ll see :) ” Keep dreaming…you never know!

What’s Lia looking forward to most after graduation? Spending the summer at my grandparents’ house in Italy. ITALY!? OH yes – her family is ITALIAN! Oh. Gee. Look what WE found! In Japan of all places. This should be POSTER SIZED in your room, girlfriend….FAVORITE!!

italian

We had quite a time getting this cap on Lia’s head due to all those curls (and some uncooperative wind)…but when my trusty assistant, Shannan, found a stairwell we hit the jackpot! The cap even stayed on…and the light in there was gorgeous!

capgown

What will Lia remember most about her photo shoot? “I will remember the knowledge that you passed on to me (I gave her a couple of camera tips). It was great talking to somebody who has a passion for photography just like me, and who has much more experience than I do. I will also remember how fun it was!”

Thanks so much for your patience while my folks were here and I had to put editing on hold, Lia. It was a JOY to spend the morning with you! I can’t wait to share them all – talk to you soon. I sure do hope we can head out for a shooting day at some point and I’ll lay some more tips on ya!

And as for you, everyone else – thank you for waiting two weeks for a new post – I’m back! Soon to come – photos of the totally kick-booty new albums I am offering, and a sweet and great looking family of 5! HAPPY THANKSGIVING WEEK!

Nikki ~ Class of ‘10

(Ok, when did 2010 sneak up on me? That’s insanity. Time is going WAY too fast…)

HI there! I’m over the top excited to share this with you – Nikki is not only the daughter of a Jersey boy (ahem, yes, I AM a Jersey GIRL – you got a problem wit dat?) who is friends with my hubby, but she’s also the daughter of a Chicago girl who I am so very happy and lucky to call my friend! (Mary & Chris, you’re awesome.)

Nikki attends Kubasaki High School – her favorite thing about her senior year is being senior class President (oh yeah, baby!) and attending all the sports games. This girl is a rock star! (And totally gorgeous with a million dollar smile, by the way.)

sittingbeachside

What keeps Nikki busy after school? Volleyball, ASB, NHS, and lifeguarding. (All that AND she’s smart!)

What is Nikki looking forward to most after graduation? Seeing her brothers & her best friend! Oh – and college, of course!

HEAVENS does this photo make me laugh….definite fave.

sugarcane

Most listened to song on her iPod: Too many to name, but right now her favorite is You Belong with Me by Taylor Swift.

Written on her favorite t-shirt: Kubasaki Varsity Volleyball (2008-2009) on the front, and “Pirate” (her nickname – ARRR) and #5 on the back.

sitting

windblown

(I LOVE MY JOB. And my clients. Had to tuck that in there.)

Who does Nikki admire most? People who aren’t afraid to take chances, and people who never give up on anything.

stunning

(So since we don’t know if she’ll wear green or white at graduation – we just HAD to take photos with BOTH!)

capandgown

What Nikki wants to be when she grows up: A teacher or a pastry chef. (I say why not both??)

doorway

Or…supermodel. Whatever.

redroof

That last one is for YOU, Ms. Mary! There are many more…but that’s it for now.

….and what will Nikki remember most about her photo shoot? How Mrs. Aviva always knew what to do to make it fun.

LOVE YOU, Nikki! See you soon to share the rest. Thank YOU for making it fun too!

Bo Knows Okinawa

I just dated myself with that title there…. I know most of you that are close to my age remember the “Bo knows…” campaign. But I digress. In the first sentence of my post – sad, isn’t it?

Bo’s mother, Renee, contacted me a couple of weeks back. She said, “I’m Rafia’s mom.” RAFIA! I met Rafia through sweet wonderful & talented Suwanee (I MISS YOU! Rafia says hi.). Most recently during my post regarding Jib & Genoa jewelry (Rafia is the dark-haired of the two beauties.) I had also met Renee’s oldest daughter, Kate – which Renee readily agreed looks nothing like Rafia, though is gorgeous in her own right. However after meeting Renee – uh, Kate? YOU look just like your mom. SO not a bad thing! Rafia apparently looks like her father, who I’m soon to meet. And Bo? Well – he’s a nice little mix of everything. Can you say GOOD GENES?

onbench

By the way, that shot on the bench there? The very first one of the shoot. I kept saying it was a cryin’ shame that this guy wasn’t comfortable in front of the camera.

Bo is in the Jr. ROTC program here, therefore the short haircut. Which I think looks great, but if it wasn’t for that – I’m certain this free spirit would have longer hair.

againstfence

I asked if he had a girlfriend. He said, “No. They’re too much trouble.” At 18 I’d have to agree with you, Bo. But your time will come. He’s leaving Okinawa and really wants to go to San Diego (I fully support that, San Diego rocks). However, he’s looking at the Pacific NW for a bit before he gets into school and heads down there. I asked if he liked Okinawa, and like any good 18-year-old – ready to fly the coop – he said, “If my parents were leaving, I’d stay!” The teenager in me hears him loud and clear – but the mother in me gets misty; it’s what you want, an independent and adventurous soul – but of course, we long to be close to our kids! I think Bo will be just fine. His warm eyes & smile could win just about anyone over.

lookingup

okiallday

(Yes, I’ll be adding that t-shirt to my collection as soon as I find it.)

Bo brought along some clothes to change into; to include a dress shirt and slacks. But not a single pair of shoes. Not even flip-flops. Gotta love a beach bum.

dressedup1

dressedbarefoot

Dad, one for you. Without the earring you …ahem… dislike. (I understand. COMPLETELY.) And with Bo’s winning smile.

dressedup

Oh… did I mention he surfs? Not at Toguchi at low tide, but I’m sure he can make use of this at some places – definitely in San Diego one day!

lookingout

Endless Summer eat your heart out.

boardflare

That is now one of my new all-time faves.

onthesand

Bo – I wish you all the best. You have an incredible family – when I meet your dad I can say I’ve met all five of you, and your sisters and your mom (HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY, RENEE!) are incredibly smart & wonderful people. Good luck and have fun – the future is bright and the waves are killer.

Ashley’s Graduating

Poor Ashley was scheduled for her shoot during spring break, and I threw my back out and wasn’t able to do it. Then rescheduling took a while, and bless her heart – she went out of her way to make it happen. Thanks for that, Ashley – you’re awesome. We headed out at about 5:30pm, and I’ll tell you – as soon as I started shooting I realized I think I want to shoot everyone as the sun goes down… the light is fantastic!

sunny2

With high school seniors, I tell them they can bring a friend if they want to because I know it might put my subject at ease. Her original friend she was going to bring was working this night, so she brought her boyfriend along. She told me his name was Will, but I figured, “What are the odds?” Well, on this tiny island – the odds are good. It happened to be a very nice Will that I had already met and photographed once before! (By the way – I didn’t notice until I looked back at that post that all your hair has been cut off. I like it!) I took him aside to ask if his mom liked Ashley, and he said yes – so we continued and had a great time together.

willandash

Pretty good-lookin’ couple I’d say.

As we walked, I asked what Ashley’s favorite class in high school was, and they BOTH answered, “PHOTOGRAPHY!” I happen to know that Mr. Fischer teaches photography at Kadena High, his son is a talented photographer as well – and he works at my daughter’s school.

Well then I got very happy. I asked if they wanted to know more about what I was doing as I was doing it…. Will told me he didn’t want me to give away any secrets, but I really am a pretty open book. Most basics with photography are things you’ll learn by shooting a lot or taking classes. (Ok, here comes a basic photography lesson – if you could care less, slide on down to look at Ashley’s gorgeous photos.)

For example, I took a shot in one particular spot (mine will come afterward). I explained to Will and Ashley that getting a photo right IN the camera will save lots of Photoshop and editing hassle later.

And then I handed Will the camera. He’s never shot with an SLR before (I quickly put the strap around his neck – that sucker is heavy), but I explained how to focus and told him to snap away. Granted, he wasn’t expecting this at ALL. He nervously snapped off two shots. I picked this one because Ashley’s mug wasn’t as bad as the other (hehe… gotta love having your boyfriend point a camera at you).

lessona

I showed him the photo on the screen and asked him what the first thing he’d do with it was when he had it downloaded on the computer. He said he’d Photoshop it, but I said, “I would hope you’d crop it. There’s a whole lot of space on the left and above that isn’t necessary. In the future, you’d save yourself that step if you just got a little closer and filled your frame when you took the photo.” So I cropped it. Can anyone guess what my next suggestion would be? (Ok – I know I have a few photogs reading, and this one might be SCREAMING at you….)

lessonb

This is a great tip – read carefully. I learned this early on while working for SN and taking photos near a construction site.

WATCH YOUR BACKGROUNDS. That sign post thingie looks like it’s coming out of Ashley’s head, doesn’t it? Again – something you COULD definitely fix in post-processing, but wouldn’t you rather get it right in camera so you don’t have to waste that precious time?

All she needs to do is move a bit (or as the photographer, YOU can move around) and you have a good angle, a full frame, and nothing coming out of your subject’s head.

inflowers

GORGEOUS. And of course, I’m happy she didn’t mug like that for me.

On to more beautiful Ashley photos, I hope that those tips helped you.

She brought her (much too large) cap and gown, and my trusty assistant Shannan found a ladder in a shady area and we started snapping – that ladder was perfect! Go Shannan!

withcap

What a SMILE! Ashley giggles a lot and I love that about her; I was and am the same way. Always keep that sense of humor.

Ashley is going to Virginia this summer to attend college in the fall – with any luck, ultimately Virginia Tech (excellent). She works so hard in high school, she takes it very seriously – which is admirable. I mean jeez – she wouldn’t even miss school to make up our shoot! (Sorry I tried to talk you into that!)

onthebench

Did I mention how much I LOVED the light in the evening???

gorgeous

One of my favorite things about Ashley happened just yesterday. She asked if she could “keep her freckles” in the photos. Ashley, I LOVED that. Girl – they’re a part of who you are, and most kids don’t like their freckles – I say wave that freckle flag high! You’re beautiful.

forkliftsitting

Yes. I made her climb onto equipment and such. It’s what I do.

fisheyefence

Sassy!

Lastly she asked if we could scramble to the sea wall to get that too – and I said, “Of COURSE!” and we did, and it was oh so good.

seawall

Will and Ashley both said they loved the sea wall and they’d miss it when they left. I hear ya.

Thanks so much, Ashley – I hope we can get some senior photos into your announcements ASAP! See you to show you everything next week!

Kayleigh’s Graduating

I met Kayleigh’s family on a bus ride home from Dragon Boat races in Naha almost a year ago. This idea of a photography business was in its infancy, but the moment I saw their family I wanted to photograph them. And I let Liz, Kayleigh’s mom, in on the fact that I have a special love of doing high school senior photos. Well I am a lucky girl because Liz contacted me a few weeks back and I got to go out and play with Kayleigh. With eyes like this, can you blame me for recruiting her?

pretty

(Yes, I just love it when the breeze works like a fan in a studio for my models! SO not planned…)

Kayleigh is probably going to stick around Okinawa with her family until they PCS. I can’t say I blame her, it’s tough to go to another country in order to attend college when your family is so far away. I can say because I’ve met them; this family is tight.

I pretty much had an idea and Kayleigh jumped on it. Or into it. Literally. And by the way – I don’t think I have one photo of her without a smile on her face.

intruck

But when I saw the clothes she brought, I knew what I wanted with that bright dress she had… and she informed me that her mother’s favorite color was YELLOW. Yellow? I can definitely do yellow.

yellow

But Kayleigh’s favorite color is purple (a girl after my own heart). We had a couple of purple shots – but here’s one of my favorites.

purplewall

How do you go from the gritty concrete and vehicles by the sea wall to a grassy hill in the same shoot? I’ll never tell…

intheflowers

(Thanks for braving the potential spiders, K.)

Sigh…I still love what I do.

beautiful

Mom (and potentially Dad) – I stopped by my place to grab the cap & gown. I made her do it…JUST for you!

capandgown

She wears it well, I’d say!

Congratulations on graduating (soon) Kayleigh! Thanks for doing whatever I told you to do – I’ll have photos to show you and your family really soon.
